Founded in 1883, the Detroit Institute of Arts is one of the world’s leading encyclopedic museums. Its exceptional collection includes the first Van Gogh painting acquired by a U.S. public museum, Diego Rivera’s renowned murals—often called the “Detroit Sistine Chapel”—and one of the country’s most comprehensive collections of African American art, among many other treasures.
Over the decades, the museum transformed from a financially strained and disconnected institution into a national leader in community engagement, supported by one of the country’s most stable business models. Salvador Salort-Pons will cover DIA’s past and present and will share how the museum is looking at its future.
