Museum stewardship, the process by which museums build and nurture relationships with the individuals and organizations who support them, is an integral part of development work. Stewardship can take many forms, ranging from individual contact to widespread outreach campaigns. This summer, I had the opportunity to learn more about this process with the University of Michigan Art Museum’s Development team. This presentation will explore how UMMA develops and fosters its relationships with donors and supporters, with a particular focus on “impact reports” and museum member stewardship.
Madeleine is a 5th-year PhD candidate in the department of Classical Studies. She is currently writing her dissertation on failed initiations into marriage in Latin literature and how we can understand such failures through the lens of queer and feminist studies. She has a long-standing interest in museums, which she has developed through docent work at the University of Michigan Natural History Museum and the Kelsey Archaeological Museum, as well as a certificate in Museum Studies. Most recently, she completed a summer development internship at the University of Michigan Art Museum.
