Public programs facilitate dialogue between academics and professionals, informing scholarship and strengthening practice.
Multiple day conferences, year-long colloquia, individual lectures, “conversations” between individuals, hands-on workshops, and Museums at Noon talks featuring our graduate students all contribute to the remarkable richness of MSP offerings.
Video recordings of some MSP lectures are archived for viewing in our Media Gallery.

Title: Museums and Movies: Reflecting and Shaping Cultural Perspectives
Date: Thursday, April 9
Time: 12:00 pm
Location: UM Museum of Art, Multi-Purpose Room (125)
Presenter: Susan Dine (PhD candidate, History of Art)
To date, the history and function of a museum in society as well as the museum-visitor perspective, through visitor studies, have been studied in-depth. In contrast, the museum in popular visual culture—especially among a public that includes non-museum visitors—has not yet been deeply explored. A close look at two popular movie examples, the Indiana Jones franchise of the 1980s and the 2018 Black Panther, illustrates significant shifts in public perceptions of museums as an institution over the last four decades. This talk will present analyses of the two case studies, looking at both in relation to contemporaneous museum study and practice and addressing how popular visual culture can both reflect and shape cultural perspectives.
