Director of Education, Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (Winchester, VA)
The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley has an exciting opportunity for a Director of Education. This position will develop, implement, manage and lead a comprehensive educational program that addresses the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley’s mission.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Museum Studies or related required, Master’s Degree preferred in related field.
- Minimum of four years progressively responsible related experience
- Extensive knowledge of professional museum principles and practices
- Commitment to serving the educational needs of diverse audiences
- Strong public speaking ability
- Prior supervisory experience, preferably in a museum setting, strongly desired
- Experience in developing and teaching education and interpretive programs for all audiences
- Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft computer applications and excellent presentation skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team. A creative self-starter who is well-organized, detail-oriented, and able to multi-task
- Knowledge of Shenandoah Valley culture, decorative and fine arts, and related topics preferred.
Day to day responsibilities include:
- Works with Deputy Director of Arts & Education to establish the education program schedule, direction, and priorities.
- Supervises education staff including Lead Educators, Manager of Youth & Student Programs, Adult Programs Manager, and Education Coordinator.
- Performs a variety of administrative duties including planning, organizing, implementing, supervising, and evaluating educational programs for the museum.
- Formulates and manages the department’s annual budget.
- Collaborates with other departments on writing public and private fundraising proposals and reports.
- Collaborates with the Deputy Director of Arts & Education, education staff, and the A&E division to establish the annual education programming plan.
- Develops and organizes teacher events in collaboration Manager of Youth & Student Programs and Adult Programs Manager.
- Develops and implements staff training related to educational and interpretive programs.
- Conducts research pertaining to the permanent collection, changing exhibitions, and educational theory as it relates to the museum experience.
- Coordinates with various program committees, task forces etc., to have effective interactions with the community.
- Teaches diverse audiences in the museum setting.
- With members of the A&E division, develops and implements interpretive materials and programs related to permanent collection and changing exhibitions.
- Develops new models and metrics for program evaluation.
- Coordinates with other departments (community relations, security, special events, guest services, etc.) to ensure programs are marketed and staffed.
- Serves as the liaison to the Education Advisory Committee and leads projects for the committee as needed.
- Actively engages in regional and national professional exchange through professional memberships, attending conferences, and continued education.
- Assists with other museum projects and activities as assigned.
