An essential component of the Museum Studies Program, the MSP Internship (Practicum) provides students an opportunity to integrate their classroom training with museum work. The internship typically entails three months of work in a museum context, although students with extensive museum experience may undertake an equivalent museum-focused research project with the approval of the MSP Director or Associate Director. Students complete the internship with a written paper, public presentation, a contribution to the MSP Blog Museum Matters@Michigan, or discussion with a small review committee. Any of these options encourage the student to consider the alignment of theory to practice based on the entirety of the MSP experience (including readings, guest lectures, public presentations, class assignments, etc.). Funding assistance is available to students to help defray the cost of pursuing the internship. Though not all MSP graduates seek employment in museums, those who do often find the internship a valuable point of entry into the professional museum world.
