Call for Proposals – Museum Studies International Symposium, “Virtual Dialogue”

The School of Design at South Dakota State University cordially invites you to actively participate in the 2021 Museum Studies International Symposium VIRTUAL DIALOGUE: Museum Academics and Professionals on Challenges and Opportunities in the Post-Covid World.  The symposium will be held virtually via Zoom on November 16-19, 2021. This event is sponsored by a private donor, who is investing in the future of Museum Studies.

This symposium will gather academics and scholars involved in Museum Studies undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as museum professionals from institutions of various typology and sizes. Specifically, the focus will be on the challenges and opportunities the COVID pandemic has provided to academics and scholars developing alternative or complementary online and hybrid course offerings, as well as to professionals implementing educational and outreach programming alternatives to the physical spaces of the museum. An overarching goal for the symposium is to better equip educators and professionals to prepare students from Museum Studies programs with the knowledge needed to work with virtual programming, which has become the norm during the pandemic and will not be disappearing in the future. Rather, virtual programming will most likely assume a complementary and essential role in supplementing the physical experience of the museum. Learning more on the successes and failures from fellow colleagues and scholars will help build greater awareness of best practices and foster professional relationships among all attendees.

The roster of confirmed keynote speakers includes:

  • Donna L. Merkt, Director of the South Dakota Art Museum;
  • Phyllis Hecht, the Founding Director of the Johns Hopkins University Master of Arts in Museum Studies program;
  • Julie Carmean, Manager of National Teacher Programs at the National Gallery of Art;
  • Anra Kennedy, Partnerships Director at Culture24.
