SUMMARY:Museo Moderno: A Values-driven Model that Positions Art and Artists as Central to Human\, Economic and Democratic Development
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Victoria Noorthoorn\, Director\, Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires and the Museum Studies Program’s 2026 Visiting Scholar \nUM Museum of Art – Helmut Stern Auditorium \nHow does art lead the way in creating our possible futures? How do the human imagination and the agency and actions of art free the potential for wonder\, for hope\, optimism and joy\, to confront times of agony\, trauma and fear? In what ways do artists of all disciplines from around the world dare still to dream of different\, alternative futures for humanity\, to envision previously unimagined paths forward? How does art furnish humanity with the means to mourn\, mitigate\, overcome and bring solace and healing to the world’s deep antagonisms and conflicts? \nIn this lecture\, Museo Moderno´s Director Victoria Noorthoorn will describe the values-driven transformation of this vibrant museum of modern and contemporary art in Buenos Aires throughout her leadership over the past 12 years. Noorthoorn has persistently worked towards creating a new model for a public museum in Argentina – and in doing so\, she has created a new museum model – that positions art and artists as drivers of educational\, social\, economic and civic development. \nCo-sponsored by the UM Museum of Art\, Arts Initiative\, and History of Art \n \nVictoria Noorthoorn is the Director of the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires since 2013. She holds a Licentiate in Art History from the University of Buenos Aires (UBA\, 1996) and an MA in Curatorial Studies from the Center for Curatorial Studies\, Bard College\, New York (1998). She has acted as Projects Coordinator for the International Program at MoMA\, New York; Assistant Curator of Contemporary Exhibitions at The Drawing Center\, New York; and Curator at Malba in Buenos Aires. Between 2004 and 2013\, she worked independently and curated the 29th Bienal de Arte de Pontevedra\, in Pontevedra\, Spain (2006); the 41 Salón Nacional de Artistas\, in Cali\, Colombia (2008); the 7a Bienal do Mercosul\, in Porto Alegre\, Brazil (2009); the 11ème Biennale de Lyon: A Terrible Beauty Is Born\, in Lyon\, France (2011); and The Circle Walked Casually\, Deutsche Bank KunstHalle\, in Berlin\, Germany (2013)\, among many other exhibitions. In 2012\, she was honoured with the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. In 2014\, she was selected to attend the Global Museum Leaders Colloquium organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art\, New York. During her tenure leading the Moderno\, the museum has undergone a deep process of development that has involved doubling its exhibition spaces\, presenting +120 exhibitions\, publishing +70 bilingual publications\, escalating its various education programs to involve +20.000 teachers a year and achieving recognition for its mental health and accessibility programs. At the Moderno\, Noorthoorn has curated exhibitions of León Ferrari\, Marta Minujín\, Marina De Caro\, Ana Gallardo\, Tracey Rose\, Zanele Muholi\, Bernardo Ortiz\, Delcy Morelos\, and Sergio De Loof\, among many others\, and group exhibitions such as A Tale of Two Worlds (2017-2018) presented first at the MMK in Frankfurt and later at Museo Moderno. During the last few years\, the Moderno has presented the yearly programs One Day on Earth (2022-2023)\, Art Is Education (2024) and Art Is Theater (2025)\, each of which has articulated a narrative of +10 exhibitions. During 2020-2025\, Noorthoorn was an active Board member of CIMAM (International Committee of Museums and Collections of Modern Art)\, and in this capacity Museo Moderno hosted the 55th CIMAM Annual Conference (2023) which focused on the educational and social dimensions of museums of modern and contemporary art and was attended by +240 museum professionals from +80 countries. Today\, Museo Moderno prepares for its 70th Anniversary Program Our Home\, The Future to be launched on April 26\, 2026.

DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Seb Chan\, Director & CEO of ACMI (formerly Australian Centre for the Moving Image) in Melbourne\, Australia and the Museum Studies Program’s 2025 Visiting Scholar \nUM Museum of Art – Helmut Stern Auditorium \nPredictably\, the first quarter of the 21st century has seen museums significantly transformed by media technology and networked society\, yet often this has been viewed as institutions reacting to\, rather than leading change. Institutions are now deeply enmeshed in complex technological systems\, platforms\, and services across all parts of a museum’s operations and practices. Today\, the nature of collections themselves is implicated as they are increasingly ‘born digital.’ These shifts all require highly skilled labor\, new strategies\, policies\, and debate to ensure that the transformations serve the museum’s community and long-term interests. \nThis talk will explore trust\, attention\, digital memory\, ephemerality\, and the fragility of new cultural artefacts\, and conversely\, maintenance\, longevity\, and the need for bold pan-institutional and sector-wide initiatives\, new skills\, and literacies. \n \nSeb Chan is the Director & CEO of ACMI\, guiding ACMI as a museum focused on screen culture and the intersection of media\, technology\, worldbuilding and storytelling. Prior to his appointment to this role\, Seb was ACMI’s and the museum field’s first Chief Experience Officer (2015-22)\, and was a key part of the team behind ACMI’s expansion into a multi-award winning\, multiplatform museum. \nPrior his time with ACMI\, Seb led the digital transformation of the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York from its award-winning interactive Pen with Local Projects\, to the acquisition of important software-based works for the Smithsonian’s collection (2011–15). Beginning his museum career in Sydney he led the Powerhouse Museum’s pioneering work in open access\, mass collaboration and digital experience during the 2000s in Sydney. His work has won awards internationally in the museum\, media and design spheres. Before becoming known in the museum world\, Seb had a successful life in electronic and experimental music as a performer\, publisher and producer. \nSeb is the current National President of the Australian Museums and Galleries Association (AMaGA)\, serves on the international advisory board member of Art Science Museum (Singapore) and is a Board member of the non-profit Tessitura Network (US). He previously served on the boards of the National Communication Museum\, Diversity Arts Australia\, ICE Parramatta\, and Music NSW; and has been an advisor to the National Museum of Australia\, National Heritage Board of Singapore\, Mellon Foundation’s Artstor\, and was a member of the Australian Government’s Gov2.0 Taskforce. \nSeb is Adjunct Professor\, School of Media and Communication\, in the College of Design and Social Context at RMIT. SUMMARY:Know Thyself: The Importance of Vision in Museum Leadership
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Neil Barclay\, President and CEO\, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History \nFebruary 20\, at 5:30 pm\, UM Museum of Art \nAs museums grapple with the complexity of a social\, political and economic change in the communities they serve\, visionary leadership of these institutions becomes critically important.  While there are many approaches to how such leadership is defined and achieved\, in its most fundamental terms\, it begins with a keen understanding of why an individual has chosen the museum field as their life’s work in the first place. In this talk\, Barclay explores the relationship between personal vision and institutional vision and how the two define the most successful leaders working today. \nIn January of 2019 Neil Barclay was selected to lead the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History as its president and CEO. Prior to that\, he served as President and CEO of the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC) in New Orleans for five years.  Barclay also served for seven years as associate director of the Performing Arts Center for the University of Texas at Austin and is the founding president and CEO of Pittsburgh’s August Wilson Center. DESCRIPTION:University of Michigan Museum of Art A Symposium on WICAD (the Workshop on Inclusive Co-Creation of Audio Descriptions) With Museum Visitors Who Are Blind\, Partially-blind\, And Sighted at UMMA\n8 – 10:30 AM – Public Panel Discussion\, Moderated by Audrey Bennett \nLocation:  University of Michigan Museum of Art \nFor generations\, large swaths of the population have been excluded from experiencing exhibitions at art museums. Those who are sighted have the privilege of visiting museums and engaging with the art within its spaces\, including reading contextual information about each piece on the placards positioned nearby. Museums have assumed that it is acceptable to make sight compulsory to engage with art and that sight alone is sufficient. However\, those who are blind and partially blind\, for instance\, are marginalized from these cultural experiences though they have a legal right to access and experience them. While the conversation around the uses of audio description started decades ago (Synder 2005)\, in recent years\, it has emerged as a viable way to facilitate blind and partially blind museum visitors experiencing museum artwork through oral descriptions of them facilitated via virtual and in-person experiences (Eardley et al. 2017; Anagnostakis et al. 2016)\, particularly during the Covid age of social distancing. However\, in those conversations\, audio descriptions are typically created solely by museum professionals\, without input from visitors who are blind and partially blind. Join us for a symposium at the University of Michigan Museum of Art to launch a generative co-creation of audio description educational program that brings together museum professionals with community members to co-create audio descriptions of select artwork from UMMA’s collection. \nClick here to register.

DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Diana Abouali\, Director\, Arab American National Museum. \nJanuary 26 at 5:30 pm\, UM Museum of Art \nThe Arab American National Museum\, located in Dearborn\, Michigan\, remains the only museum in the country that interprets and presents the history and culture of Arab Americans. Diana Abouali will chart the origins\, development\, and future prospects of AANM\, situating it within its broader social\, cultural and political contexts. \nDiana Abouali is director of the Arab American National Museum (AANM). In the last twenty years\, she held leadership positions at museums\, cultural heritage\, and refugee institutions in Palestine and Jordan and worked as Assistant Professor at Dartmouth College for History and Middle East Studies. She serves on several boards and committees including the Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services (ACCESS)\, ArteEast (NYC)\, CultureSource (Detroit)\, the Citizens Advisory Committee at the University of Michigan-Dearborn\, and the general assembly of Taawon-Welfare Association (Palestine). SUMMARY:In Process: A Symposium in Honor of Ray Silverman
DESCRIPTION:Colleagues\, students\, and members of the community are invited to join in celebrating Ray Silverman’s retirement from his position as Professor of History of Art\, African Studies\, and Museum Studies with a two-day symposium at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Inspired by Dr. Silverman’s seminal volume\, Museums as Process: Translating Local and Global Knowledges (Routledge 2014)\, the symposium invites discussion about methodologies\, challenges\, and benefits of undertaking scholarship\, museum work\, and creative production through collaboration and community engagement. We ask\, what does it mean for the process of collaboration to be an end in itself\, and how might this perspective shift values in the academy and beyond? \nThe program will begin on the afternoon of Friday\, September 30 and end late-afternoon on Saturday\, October 1\, 2022. DESCRIPTION:Colleagues\, students\, and members of the community are invited to join in celebrating Ray Silverman’s retirement from his position as Professor of History of Art\, African Studies\, and Museum Studies with a two-day symposium at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Inspired by Dr. Silverman’s seminal volume\, Museums as Process: Translating Local and Global Knowledges (Routledge 2014)\, the symposium invites discussion about methodologies\, challenges\, and benefits of undertaking scholarship\, museum work\, and creative production through collaboration and community engagement. We ask\, what does it mean for the process of collaboration to be an end in itself\, and how might this perspective shift values in the academy and beyond? \nThe program will begin on the afternoon of Friday\, September 30 and end late-afternoon on Saturday\, October 1\, 2022. DESCRIPTION:Bénédicte Savoy \nAfrica’s Struggle for Its Art: History of a Postcolonial Defeat 1965-1985 \nApril 7 at 5:30 pm\, UM Museum of Art (Helmut Stern auditorium) \nIn the wake of postcolonial African independence\, African intellectuals and politicians spearheaded a movement to pursue repatriation of artworks stolen during the colonial era and placed in Western museums.  Art Historian and curator Bénédicte Savoy brings to light this largely unknown but deeply important history.  An expert on restitution and cultural heritage\, Savoy reconstructs a story of missed opportunity and defeat that still resonates in today’s repatriation discourse. \nBénédicte Savoy is a professor of modern art history at the Technical University of Berlin\, Germany\, and professor for the cultural history of European art at the Collège de France in Paris\, France. \nCo-sponsored by the University of Michigan’s African Studies Center\, Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\, and Museum of Art

DESCRIPTION:Date:  Friday\, September 20 \nTime & Location:  2:00 pm\, UM Museum of Art \nUMMA invites Museum Studies Program students to an exclusive meet and greet with collector Peter Cohen\, whose photographs are the subject of UMMA’s upcoming interactive exhibition Take Your Pick.  Take Your Pick invites you—the Museum’s visitors—to select photographs for our permanent collection. \n  \nWhat belongs in a permanent collection\, and why? Who and what should be represented\, and how should we decide? This exhibition considers these questions in regard to 1\,000 amateur photographs on loan from the private collection of Peter J. Cohen\, who has gathered more than 60\,000 snapshots while exploring flea markets in the United States and Europe over two decades.
