SUMMARY:Balikan: Shared Stewardship and Ethical Returns for Philippine Collections
DESCRIPTION:On October 24-25\, 2025\, join the Inclusive History Project for Balikan: Shared Stewardship and Ethical Returns for Philippine Collections\, a two-day symposium at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. This symposium brings together scholars\, archivists\, cultural heritage workers\, and community activists from across the globe who are collaborating and advocating to better represent and activate Philippine collections in libraries\, archives\, and museums. \nThe central question that will be explored throughout the two-day symposium is: What are the current and future directions of shared stewardship of Philippine colonial collections? The symposium will be a space to share resources and insights\, further explore and develop best practices for caring for Philippine collections across institutions\, and continue building networks amongst those pursuing reparative work related to Philippine collections. Speakers will discuss their efforts to rethink and intervene in institutional practices and bring Philippine collections closer to communities by pursuing outright repatriation\, knowledge sharing using digital tools\, and/or shared stewardship arrangements. \nThe Balikan: Shared Stewardship and Ethical Returns for Philippine Collections symposium is part of ReConnect/ReCollect: Reparative Connections to Philippine Collections at the University of Michigan led by Deirdre de la Cruz and Ricky Punzalan and operating in partnership with the Inclusive History Project at the University of Michigan. Learn more about the project. \nBalikan: Shared Stewardship & Ethical Returns for Philippine Collections is presented by the Inclusive History Project in partnership with the Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies Program\, the Museum Studies Program\, the Bentley Historical Library\, the Clements Library\, the Penny W. We will explore circulation in all its forms\, through its various manifestations in the arts\, critical theory\, and new media. \nThis year’s keynote speaker will be Ariella Azoulay\, Professor of Comparative Literature and filmmaker and art curator\, currently teaching at Brown University. Azoulay’s work explores visual culture\, offering an in-depth critique of contemporary forms of violence\, imperialism and body politics. DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, March 27 at 6:30 pm \nMichigan League (Michigan Room) \nPresentation by Steven Lubar Professor of American Studies\, History of Art and Architecture\, and History\, Brown University and Museum Studies Program Visiting Scholar \nCurators are experts on an astonishing range of topics. But what else do they know? I believe that curators’ hands-on work with art\, artifacts\, and specimens provides them a kind of knowledge unavailable in any other way. Handling objects\, understanding their materiality\, offers insights into their histories of creation\, meaning\, and use. Organizing them for storage\, research and exhibition allows new insights that allow understandings of connections across space and change over time. Curatorial knowledge matters\, even as the role of the museum and curator changes. \n  \nSteven Lubar is professor in the Departments of American Studies\, History\, and History of Art and Architecture at Brown University. He was previously curator at the National Museum of American History\, and Director of Brown’s John Nicholas Brown Center for Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage and Brown’s Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology. He is a 2015 Guggenheim Fellow. SUMMARY:Historic House Museums workshop
DESCRIPTION:The morning session of this workshop is free and open to the public.  The afternoon visit to Fair Lane Estate\, however\, is limited to 40 people and is fully registered. \nHouse museums have been a mainstay of the American museum landscape for generations.  The most common museum type in the United States\, these monuments to affluence and influence—often associated with ‘great men’ and community founders—are found from small towns to major urban centers.  Over the last half century\, the model for the historic house museum has become both familiar and entrenched.  Today\, historic house museums are being challenged: to respond to changing audiences and interests of contemporary museum goers: to tell more complex—and difficult—histories; and to more fully represent the many and diverse communities and individuals that constitute our past and present. \nRe-Imagining the Historic House Museum brings together scholars\, professionals\, and provocateurs who are transforming historic house museums to tell new stories and create new visitor experiences.  This all-day event has two parts.  In the morning\, speakers will introduce their work and institutions in on-campus presentations.  In the afternoon\, pre-registered participants are invited to join a visit to Henry Ford’s Fair Lane Estate in Dearborn\, MI\, currently in the midst of an innovative renovation.  Attendees will be introduced to new approaches to historic house museums and have the opportunity for a rare behind-the-scenes look at work being undertaken in our own community. \n  \n8:30 am – 12:30 pm\, Michigan League (Koessler Room\, 3rd floor) \n  \nParticipants: \nElizabeth Chew\, Vice President for Museum Programs\, James Madison’s Montpelier \nLisa Yun Lee\, Executive Director\, National Public Housing Museum and Director\, School of Art and Art History\, University of Illinois\, Chicago \nMark Heppner\, Vice President for Historic Resources\, Historic Ford Estates \nFrank Vagnone\, co-author\, Anarchist’s Guide to Historic House Museums \nNancy Villa Bryk\,  Associate Professor\, Program in Historic Preservation\, Eastern Michigan University \n  \nPlease see the complete schedule\, presentation titles\, and participant biographies here. \n  \n* The bus to Fairlane Estate will leave from the Michigan League at 1:30 pm (The bus is fully reserved; if you have reserved a spot and must cancel\, please email ummsp@umich.edu to open your spot for someone else.) \n  \n  \n
