SUMMARY:Museums in Time of Polycrisis: The Promise of Cultural Institutions
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Dr. Porchia Moore \nJanuary 27 at 5:00 pm \nEldersveld Room\, 5670 Haven Hall (505 S. State Street\, Ann Arbor) \nAs a global polycrisis continues to impact modern day life\, perhaps no other institution is experiencing the impact of rapid change more than the American museum. In this talk\, Dr. Moore will identify and name the challenges to museums and the impact on visitors\, communities\, and museum professionals. What is the value of the museum in the 21st century? How can those who love museums fight back to preserve the positive benefits of museums as these institutions work hard to preserve memory\, archive human activity\, and work to tell inclusive\, truthful\, and powerful stories? Dr. Moore will outline the promise of cultural institutions and discuss how we need museums now more than ever to help us make meaning of our lives\, create places of respite and refuge\, and foster welcoming for all communities; especially those with histories of oppression and marginalization. \nDr. Porchia Moore is the Associate Director of the Center for Arts\, Migration\, and Entrepreneurship and Associate Professor and Director of Museum Studies at the University of Florida. She is the Co-Director of the international collaboratory\, The Incluseum\, and the co-founder of the Visitors of Color Project. Her scholarship examines the relationship between digital technologies\, race\, identity\, and communities. \n  \nDr. Porchia Moore’s visit to Ann Arbor has been coordinated by the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum in collaboration with the Museum Studies Program and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies at the University of Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Alan Rice\, PhD\, Fulbright Scholar; Professor of English and American Studies; Director of the Research Centre in Migration\, Diaspora & Exile; Co-Director of the Institute for Black Atlantic Research\, University of Central Lancashire\, United Kingdom \nWhen: 12:00 pm on April 4 \nWhere: Eldersveld Room\, 5670 Haven Hall \n  \nFrom Lubaina Himid to the Battle of Bamber Bridge: Curating and Narrating Black Atlantic Stories in British Museums and Communities \nVisiting Fulbright Scholar Professor Alan Rice (DAAS\, UMICH) will discuss a range of his work as curator\, academic and activist in Lancashire\, Great Britain. As a scholar of the Black Atlantic he has curated and co-curated exhibitions with Black British artists including the Turner Prize winner\, Lubaina Himid\, Godfried Donkor\, textile artist Althea McNish and rising stars Jade de Montserrat and Lela Harris. This talk will showcase these curatorial interventions including work with the Whitworth on their Trade and Empire exhibition where together with his co-curators he used extant objects to tell new stories about slavery and exploitation. \nMore recent work in Lancaster focuses on its history as the fourth largest slave port and uses the work of Black British artists to challenge the elision of difficult histories. He will discuss how he\, together with Lancaster Black History Group\, uses the work of Himid\, de Montserrat and Harris to get African Atlantic representation into the heart of the museum. His final short case study will show how together with Preston Black History Group he has worked with the community in Bamber Bridge to memorialise the widely forgotten story of a mutiny against Jim Crow segregation by African American troops in a small village in Lancashire. DESCRIPTION:This is Rome\, Too: Decolonial Practices in the Eternal City \nGala Patenkovic\, PhD Candidate\, Romance Languages and Literatures \nSeptember 27 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nEldersveld Room\, 5670 Haven Hall \nHow can we reimagine the future of museums? How do we make museums decolonial? How does this decolonial practice change our perception of what a museum can be\, and how do we present it to the public? In this talk I will share my experience interning at the Organization QuestaèRoma in Rome\, Italy\, and present their approach in engaging the public with decolonial practices through varied events\, and specifically through their decolonial tours of the capital. These tours highlight what is “hidden in plain sight” : the distant and not-so-distant architectural remnants of colonial history that is often unobserved\, taken for granted and/or unquestioned by the locals and tourists alike. \nGala Patenkovic is a PhD Candidate in the French Program of Romance Languages and Literatures. Her dissertation addresses representations of immigration and belonging in contemporary French comic books. She holds an active interest in visual and museum studies. \nPresentation flyer

DESCRIPTION:Competing Interests: Examining Identity Politics in the Display of Ancient Egypt \nHeidi Hilliker\, PhD student in Middle Eastern Studies \nNovember 30 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nEldersveld Room\, 5670 Haven Hall \nIn recent years\, there has been a movement to decolonize Western museums\, calling for a practice of self-reflection and transparency paired with a recognition of their Western-centric and criminal foundations. This has led institutions with collections of ancient Egyptian art and artifacts to revisit the ways in which they classify\, interpret\, and display their collections. These shifts in museum practice have revealed many competing interests\, exposing the complex ways in which inclusion\, identity\, and ownership are deeply intertwined. I witnessed these competing interests first-hand this summer during my MSP internship when a new exhibition highlighting the influence of ancient Egypt and Nubia in contemporary black music debuted at the Dutch National Museum of Antiquity in Leiden\, the Netherlands. \nIn this talk\, I will discuss this and other curatorial and institutional case studies that reflect current trends and the complicated discourses developing from them. Additionally\, I will consider the future of these movements and how they may affect museum practices. \nFlyer

DESCRIPTION:Global Interns: museum practice in Israel & Uganda \nSeptember 29 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nEldersveld Room\, 5670 Haven Hall \n  \nAlexandra Norwood\,  PhD candidate\, Anthropology \nThe Apes of Uganda: An Exhibit and Outreach Program at the Uganda Museum \nUganda is often called the Pearl of Africa\, a phrase invoked by Winston Churchill describing the country: “for magnificence\, for variety of form and color\, for profusion of brilliant life – bird\, insect\, reptile\, beast” (W. S. Churchill\, 1909). Uganda’s remarkable biodiversity includes the presence of two species of living apes and a rich hominoid fossil record. Uganda’s importance to the evolution and conservation of great apes makes it essential to promote awareness and generate interest in protecting both fossil sites and the living apes. \nThe “Apes of Uganda” Exhibition and Outreach Project is the result of a collaboration between staff at the Uganda National Museum and biological anthropologists at the University of Michigan. The goal of this project was to share information about ape evolution in Uganda\, the lives of chimpanzees and gorillas in Uganda’s National Park\, and the importance of conserving both fossil sites and the National Parks where living apes are found. The exhibition at the Uganda National Museum opened in February 2023 and has been visited by ~ 100\,000 visitors. A complementary schools outreach program carried out in July reached 18 Ugandan public primary and secondary schools in western Uganda\, near National Parks where great apes live. The measured impact of these efforts teaches us valuable lessons about how to make this type of educational programming as effective as possible and demonstrates the importance of meaningful\, outward-facing partnerships between researchers and museums. \nDenisa Glacova\,  PhD student\, Middle East Studies \nIs ANU – Museum of the Jewish People Telling the Whole Story? \nWhen asked about the ten-year-long renovation of ANU – Museum of the Jewish People in Tel Aviv\, Dan Tadmor\, the museum’s CEO explained that the conceptual\, technological\, artistic\, and architectural overhaul was necessary to turn the institution into “the most comprehensive Jewish museum in the world.” Even its name was changed then – the former Beit Hatfutsot\, or the Diaspora Museum\, became ANU\, i.e. we in Hebrew\, reflecting its ambitious attempt to represent “all parts of the Jewish people.” Or\, as Tadmor puts it\, to “tell the whole story.” \nIn my short talk\, I will reflect on my three-month internship at The Koret International School for Jewish Peoplehood in ANU. I will focus on ANU’s “vision of radical [Jewish] togetherness” and address its methodology and tools used to create an overarching exhibition narrative connecting Jewish histories and cultures throughout more than 4\,000 years. Additionally\, I will present a few possibilities to include stories pushed to the margins in the new three-store exhibition and to diversify the narrative of the current exhibition through educational programming in order to get closer to the – in my opinion – unattainable ideal of “telling the whole story.” \nMuseums@Noon flyer

SUMMARY:Working with Contemporary Artists: A Workshop with Ferran Barenblit
DESCRIPTION:“Art is what makes life more interesting than art\,” said French artist Robert Filliou. He was right: working with contemporary artists is one of the most enriching activities that a professional or an organization can undertake. Whether in a museum\, other cultural institution\, or any public or private position\, working with artists will unleash interpretations and emotions. In a globally interconnected\, culturally diverse\, and increasingly complex world\, contemporary artists give voice to the varied and changing cultural landscape of identities\, values\, and beliefs. Their work is always at the crossroad of theory\, subjects\, concepts\, methods\, and materials. The increasing role of audiences can generate unexpected results that can benefit both individuals and communities. \nIn this workshop\, we will study the conceptual\, practical\, ethical\, legal\, and financial elements to consider when working with contemporary artists. We will also examine many successful (and a few unfortunate) examples that will help us to understand how art\, according to Yoko Ono\, makes us “walk a half an inch above ground.” \nThe workshop is open to students\, faculty\, and museum professionals. Ferran Barenblit is an internationally recognized museum director and curator who has led three art museums in the last twenty years\, including MACBA Museum of Contemporary Art Barcelona (2015-2021). He is an expert with a deep understanding of the political and social complexities of art museums and the need to consider them as an essential catalyst for engaged citizenship. Ferran has worked with artists Christian Marclay\, Raqs Media Collective\, Forensic Architecture\, Akram Zaatari\, Andrea Fraser\, Jeremy Deller\, Teresa Margolles\, Rabih Mroué\, Halil Altindere\, Cristina Lucas\, Maria Eichhorn\, and Jiri Kowanda\, among many others. Since 2021\, Ferran has held the position of visiting professor at the University of Michigan. His current curatorial projects include the 16th Cuenca Biennial\, Ecuador (2023) and a major retrospective of the work of Ben Vautier (MUAC\, Mexico City\, 2022-2023).
