SUMMARY:Tour of  “Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World” exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, March 9 at 12:00 pm \nHatcher Library North\, First Floor\, Room 100J \nJoin Abigail Staub (MSP22 and PhD Candidate\, Interdepartmental Program in Mediterranean Art & Archaeology) for a tour of an exhibit she curated in the Hatcher Gallery “Materia Magica: Materiality and Ritual in the Greco-Roman World.” \nA half hour tour will be led by Abigail Staub (MSP22\, PhD Candidate in Interdepartmental Program in Mediterranean Art & Archaeology).  The exhibit is a collaboration and displays items from several University of Michigan units: the library’s Special Collections Research Center and Papyrology Collection\, the Museum of Natural History\, and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology.  Artifacts include a diverse array of items which were created to communicate with and call upon various unseen\, supernatural forces for aid and protection. While the objects on display are disparate at first glance\, ranging from lead tablets and amulets to papyrus and parchment leaves\, they all share a common thread: they have long been labeled as “magical” in traditional Western scholarship.  However\, each of these artifacts is better understood on a broad spectrum of ancient ritual\, from subversive and transgressive acts to highly social and visible ones. The exhibit highlights the objects’ oft-overlooked material dimensions\, asking us to consider how qualities like color\, texture\, and weight shaped an object’s perceived efficacy and meaning. \nThe tour is limited to 10 attendees\, so please sign up as soon as possible!

DESCRIPTION:Traversing Mountains and Waters: Visits to the Centennial Exhibition at the National Palace Museum of Taipei \nSpeakers: History of Art PhD students – Qi Zheng\, Meichen Liu\, Yueling Li\, Star Song \nMarch 23 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm \nTappan Room 180 and online via Zoom. \nAt the conclusion of 2025\, the National Palace Museum of Taipei celebrated its centennial with displays highlighting a hundred years of collection\, preservation\, exhibition\, and education. This landmark exhibition series\, “Enduring Legacy\,” is recognized globally as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view more than a hundred masterpieces: exceptional treasures and artworks housed in this prestigious museum’s collection. Many of the objects have never been on public display\, and others have appeared only rarely due to conservation restrictions. \nIn this presentation\, four graduate students from the Department of History of Art will share their experiences visiting the museum. Addressing the artworks and the exhibits\, the presenters will discuss their impressions and the potential trajectories of another century of museology.

Washington St.\nFree & open to the public \nMuseums are the classrooms of our country. They play a crucial role in helping us understand the nation’s complex past. Join us for a dynamic conversation with Lonnie G. Bunch III\, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution\, and Lynette Clemetson\, director of Wallace House Center for Journalists\, as they reflect on the significance of the 250th anniversary of the United States. At a moment in which discussions about our shared past and collective future feel especially urgent\, this event offers an opportunity to learn from a leader who has devoted his career to informing and inspiring Americans to strive for the public good. \nQ&A will follow and copies of Secretary Bunch’s book “A Fool’s Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush\, Obama\, and Trump” will be available for purchase. \nLonnie G. Bunch III is the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian. He assumed his position June 16\, 2019. As Secretary\, he oversees 21 museums\, 21 libraries\, the National Zoo\, numerous research centers\, and several education units and centers. Two new museums—the National Museum of the American Latino and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum—are in development. Bunch was the founding director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Bunch chronicled the creation of the museum in his book A Fool’s Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush\, Obama\, and Trump and is the first historian to be Secretary of the Institution. Since 2024\, Bunch has been Honorary Professor of Practice at Queen’s University Belfast. A member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences\, Bunch received France’s highest award\, The Legion of Honor\, in 2021. \nLynette Clemetson is Director of Wallace House Center for Journalists\, home of the Knight-Wallace Fellowships for Journalists and the Livingston Awards for Young Journalists at the University of Michigan. She came to the university from NPR where she was Senior Director of Strategy and Content Initiatives. Her career in journalism spans newspapers\, magazines and audio across a range of platforms. As a reporter\, she was a Washington-based correspondent for The New York Times and Newsweek. Prior to her domestic correspondent work\, she was an international correspondent for Newsweek based in Hong Kong\, where she covered the former British colony’s return to Chinese rule in 1997. She moved into digital strategy and leadership in 2008 as the founding managing editor of TheRoot.com\, launched for The Washington Post Company with Henry Louis Gates Jr. She is also the former Director of Content Strategy at Pew Center on the States. \nThis 2026 Marc and Constance Jacobson Lecture is presented by the Institute for the Humanities in partnership with Wallace House Center for Journalists.
