DESCRIPTION:Women in museum computing: a brief history of data entry & skilled labor  \nAlexandria Rayburn (MSP 19; PhD\, Information) \nOctober 9 from 2:00 – 3:00 pm \nOnline via Zoom \nMuseum collections are many things\, but primarily they function as repositories of information\, where data-intensive work has been conducted for decades. Like other knowledge infrastructures\, the information in museum collections is built on installed bases and require highly skilled technicians to maintain these long-lasting digital systems. However\, in representations of this computing work\, women’s voices and perspectives are under-appreciated\, even though they have significant labor contributions in this area. \nMy dissertation examines the experiences of women working in computing roles within museum collections and seeks to understand their unique approaches to data management. Drawing from this research\, this talk will explore some of the early gendered data practices at both the Smithsonian Institution and the Metropolitan Museum of Art— two highly regarded institutions whose leadership in early museum computing has had lasting implications on museum best practices\, and the value given to computing tasks like data entry. \nFlyer

DESCRIPTION:The biannual Charles F. Fraker Conference is organized by doctoral students in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor in honor of Professor Emeritus of Spanish Charles F. Fraker. Originally a venue for graduate students of Hispanic Studies to meet and discuss the subjects of their research\, the conference has grown to include the work of students of many other fields and disciplines. In previous years\, the Charles F. Fraker Conference has featured as its keynote speakers intellectuals such as Jacques Lezra\, Alberto Moreiras\, Jacques Rancière\, Bill Brown\, Michael Taussig\, WJT Mitchell\, and Robert T. Tally Jr. \nIn 2025\, the conference will welcome Professor Anna Kornbluh (University of Illinois\, Chicago) who will deliver the keynote lecture and workshop. SUMMARY:Balikan: Shared Stewardship and Ethical Returns for Philippine Collections
DESCRIPTION:On October 24-25\, 2025\, join the Inclusive History Project for Balikan: Shared Stewardship and Ethical Returns for Philippine Collections\, a two-day symposium at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. This symposium brings together scholars\, archivists\, cultural heritage workers\, and community activists from across the globe who are collaborating and advocating to better represent and activate Philippine collections in libraries\, archives\, and museums. \nThe central question that will be explored throughout the two-day symposium is: What are the current and future directions of shared stewardship of Philippine colonial collections? The symposium will be a space to share resources and insights\, further explore and develop best practices for caring for Philippine collections across institutions\, and continue building networks amongst those pursuing reparative work related to Philippine collections.
