DESCRIPTION:The book Object Lessons and the Formation of Knowledge: The University of Michigan Museums\, Libraries\, and Collections 1817–2017 presents a full color journey through the treasures of the University’s collections. A panel discussion with a focus on items from library collections will occur on Sept 26 at 5:00 pm at Hatcher Library. Panelists include Martha Conway\, director of the U-M Library’s Special Collections Library; Kevin Graffagnino\, director of the Clements Library; and Terry McDonald\, director of the Bentley Historical Library. \nCopies of the book will be available for sale and signing at the event\, and refreshments will be provided. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Growing Protocols: Documenting the Collaborative Process within the Heritage Seeds for Sustainable Lifeways Project
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Elspeth Geiger\, PhD candidate\, Anthropology \nFriday\, September 29 from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm\, UM Museum of Art auditorium \n  \nGrowing Protocols: Documenting the Collaborative Process within the Heritage Seeds for Sustainable Lifeways Project \nCollaboration between museums and Native American communities has overwhelmingly centered on either museum exhibitions or legally-mandated processes such as those based on the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). The Heritage Seeds for Sustainable Lifeways project departs from these types of collaborative efforts by focusing on creating protocols and relationships surrounding University of Michigan Museum of Anthropological Archaeology (UMMAA) plant collections. The project works to bring a broad range of individuals from university settings and Tribal communities into conversation over their shared interest in the collections. \nThis presentation will explore my experience with the Heritage Seeds Project through my practicum at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens. As a result of my documentation of the information sharing and planning sessions\, we can examine the processes behind the creation of collaborative frameworks.
