SUMMARY:Opening exhibition reception - "I have a crisis for you": Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War
DESCRIPTION:In February 2022\, the world witnessed the invasion of Ukraine and all-out war of aggression by the Russian Federation. Since this time\, massive casualties\, human rights violations\, and an unprecedented refugee crisis have ensued. Women artists of Ukraine have responded. They know their message is powerful\, and the amplification of their voices is critical for victory in a very real battle for survival. Curated by Grace Mahoney (U-M Slavic Languages and Literatures) and Jessica Zychowicz\, Ph.D. (Fulbright Ukraine and U-M Alumna)\, “I have a crisis for you”: Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War showcases work created by women artists in response to Russia’s war in Ukraine. The featured artists have also been selected because of their prominent interest and exploration of issues relating to gender in their works. The artworks and documents engage a range of subjects from women volunteering as combatants to the processes of grieving and reflect ongoing discourses in Ukrainian feminist scholarship. The exhibit is accompanied by a companion website which includes an expanded set of informational and aid-related resources. \n\nOpening reception on Thursday\, September 15 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. in the Lane Hall Gallery.\nA roundtable conversation with artists featured in the exhibition “I have a crisis for you”: Women Artists of Ukraine Respond to War on Friday\, September 16 from 3:30 – 5:00 in Weiser Hall. DESCRIPTION:In 1925\, the University of Michigan’s archaeological expedition to Egypt commissioned artist Hamzeh Carr to make facsimiles of the colorful murals they were discovering\, and these images have been widely reproduced ever since. But who was Hamzeh Carr? In preparation for a future exhibition and publication of the Kelsey Museum’s Hamzeh Carr paintings\, curator Terry Wilfong has been tracing the amazing career of this mysterious artist and will share some of his surprising findings. \nKelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators\, staff members\, researchers\, and graduate students talking about their recent research or current projects. DESCRIPTION:Museums@Noon – Friday\, April 15 at 12:00 pm \nEngaging with Campus Collections – Digital Interpretation and Curation at UMMA & the Stearns Collection \n  \nIsabelle Gillet\, PhD candidate in the History of Art \nMuting the Museum’s Omniscient Narrator\n\nWhy do we trust museum labels even when they sound like they were written by a disengaged but knowledgeable AI? Instead\, can we rely on an “I” to guide our eye through the galleries? This talk will reflect on an eighteen-month fellowship at the University of Michigan Museum of Art and focus on its main accomplishment: Insight. Insight is an online collection of essays\, curated to share insightful\, individual\, and informative responses to works from the museum’s collection. This research outreach project elevates museum interpretation with personal narratives and experiences. \n  \nChuyi Zhu\, PhD candidate in Ethnomusicology \nMuseums in the Pandemic: Virtual Exhibits\, Experience Design\, and Innovative Collaborations \nIn the presentation\, I will talk about two virtual exhibitions I worked on as an intern of the Stearns Collection of Musical Instruments at the University of Michigan. The first virtual exhibition\, which I planned\, designed\, and produced in 2021\, focuses exclusively on the UM Javanese Gamelan. The second exhibition\, which I helped curate in 2022\, focuses more generally on representing the entire Stearns Collection. DESCRIPTION:Bénédicte Savoy \nAfrica’s Struggle for Its Art: History of a Postcolonial Defeat 1965-1985 \nApril 7 at 5:30 pm\, UM Museum of Art (Helmut Stern auditorium) \nIn the wake of postcolonial African independence\, African intellectuals and politicians spearheaded a movement to pursue repatriation of artworks stolen during the colonial era and placed in Western museums.  Art Historian and curator Bénédicte Savoy brings to light this largely unknown but deeply important history.  An expert on restitution and cultural heritage\, Savoy reconstructs a story of missed opportunity and defeat that still resonates in today’s repatriation discourse. \nBénédicte Savoy is a professor of modern art history at the Technical University of Berlin\, Germany\, and professor for the cultural history of European art at the Collège de France in Paris\, France. \nCo-sponsored by the University of Michigan’s African Studies Center\, Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies\, and Museum of Art

It takes the arts’ potential as a starting point for imagining new epistemologies and ethics of living together within the limits of the planet. The pavilion responds to the current political moment and the fact that the idea of democracy that undergirded the post-1945 European order is in peril. Fostering open\, creative debate\, the pavilion serves as a source of inspiration to reframe art and museums as spaces for experimentation and analysis that critically engage current developments in Europe. The Democracy Pavilion is the response of L’Internationale to the European Cultural Foundation’s call to promote critical thinking and radical imagination. The panelists represent institutions affiliated with L’Internationale\, a confederation of seven European art museums from Belgium\, Spain\, the Netherlands\, Turkey\, Sweden\, Slovenia\, and Ireland. The Critical Need for Integrating Natural History Collections in Infectious Disease Studies\,” published in January 2021. To walk its halls and view its art is more than visiting a museum\, it’s experiencing history itself. The museum came into existence as a fortress in the 12th century but was transformed into a private gallery for the royal collection in the 17th century\, and then finally a public museum during the French Revolution. The collection was greatly expanded under Napoleon\, and it was at this time that the Gabii sculptural assemblage entered the Louvre and became the cornerstone of the Roman sculpture collection. \nIn this talk\, I discuss the ancient site of Gabii\, the sculptures that once stood there\, and their journey at the Louvre. I explore the relationship between present perceptions and ancient praxis\, as well as the transformation of our knowledge and approach to ancient art that is still occurring today. By sharing my reflections during my time at the Louvre\, I hope to invite others to consider how we all play a part in this transformation by viewing ancient art in the present\, setting the stage for future change. \nBrownBag_Ortiz

Our hope is also that this initiative will create the possibility of forging closer bonds and exchanges across MSP graduate student cohorts. \nOther potential roles for the group might include naming a student to serve on the MSP Steering Committee and active participation in the planning and implementing of “The MSP @ 20” – our program’s 20th anniversary which we will be celebrating in 2022. And this is just the beginning! We anticipate that the advisory body will develop a life and energy of its own that will inform and enrich our existing MSP endeavors. DESCRIPTION:Speaker:  Estrella Salgado (Class of 2021\, BA History\, Museum Studies Minor) \nWhen:  12:00 pm on Monday\, April 19 \nWhere: Online via Zoom (Meeting ID: 939 6236 5716 / Passcode: 584236) \n“Centrally Located\, Easily Reached”: An Evolving Museum and Department Store in the Progressive Era \nIn a 1913 essay\, museum reformer John Cotton Dana boldly suggested\, “A great city department store of the first class is perhaps more like a good museum of art than are any of the museums we have yet established.” In the Progressive Era\, museums were elite institutions with little context for the uninitiated. Dana saw a more democratic possibility\, and observed the department store as a model for bringing in many people from different classes. He also believed that forming connections with local businesses was valuable\, and fortunately\, Louis Bamberger of Bamberger’s department store agreed. The businessman funded the creation of Dana’s Newark Museum\, and he had a keen appreciation about how aligning with arts and culture increased Bamberger’s revenue and reputation. The interactions between these organizations provide a compelling lens through which to view the increased accessibility and commercialization of museums\, as well as the cultural capital sought after by corporations. \nEstrella’s presentation is the culminating feature of a year-long independent research project mentored by Prof. Thomas Willette (Department of the History of Art and the Residential College’s Arts and Ideas Program) and sponsored by the Museum Studies Minor. \nSalgado flyer
