SUMMARY:Dr. Uzma Z. Rizvi - Visualizing Care: Storytelling as Data Visualization at MohenjoDaro
DESCRIPTION:The Museum Studies Program is proud to co-sponsor Visualizing Care: Storytelling as Data Visualization at MohenjoDaro. \nSet in the World Heritage Site of MohenjoDaro (Sindh\, Pakistan)\, Visualizing Care approaches archaeological data visualization through deep mapping. Experimenting with multimodal and accessible forms of archaeological data presentation\, this study explores how care through time can be documented. Within an archaeological context\, the materiality of care can be seen through the intentional making/unmaking of urban design\, architectural features\, and infrastructure. Within a historical and contemporary framework\, care can be visualized through conservation and the relationships between caretakers and the site itself\, drawing attention to the affective aspects of archaeological research. This transdisciplinary project utilizes archival material\, LiDAR and 3-dimensional artifact captures\, ethnographic conversations\, GIS mapping\, sound\, and experiments with mudbrick\, to explore the many different ways of knowing the ancient city of MohenjoDaro. \nDr. Uzma Z. Rizvi is Professor of Anthropology and Urban Studies\, in the Department of Social Science and Cultural Studies\, Pratt Institute\, Brooklyn\, NY. She is also a visiting faculty at Shah Abdul Latif University in Khairpur\, Pakistan. Rizvi’s work intentionally interweaves archaeology with cultural criticism\, philosophy\, critical theory\, art\, and design. With over two decades of work on decolonizing methodologies\, intersectional and feminist strategies\, and transdisciplinary approaches\, her work has intentionally pushed disciplinary limits\, and demanded ethical decolonial praxis at all levels of engagement\, from teaching to research. She is the PI of the Laboratory for Integrated Archaeological Visualization and Heritage (liavh.org)\, currently working at the 3rd millennium BCE world heritage site of MohenjoDaro\, Pakistan. \nThe lecture begins at 4pm at the Kelsey Museum (Room 125). Reception to follow at 5:30pm. \nThis event was organized by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the Center for Community Archaeology and Heritage. \nLecture flyer

SUMMARY:America at 250: History\, Memory\, and Truth. A Conversation with Lonnie G. Bunch III\, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Lonnie G. Bunch\, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution \nOctober 28 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm \nRackham Graduate School Auditorium (915 E. Washington Street\, Ann Arbor) \nThe Museum Studies Program is proud to sponsor America at 250: History\, Memory\, and Truth. A Conversation with Lonnie G. Bunch III\, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution \nMuseums are the classrooms of our country. They play a crucial role in helping us understand the nation’s complex past. Join us for a dynamic conversation with Lonnie G. Bunch III\, Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and Lynette Clemetson\, Director of Wallace House Center for Journalists\, as they reflect on the significance of the 250th anniversary of the United States. At a moment in which discussions about our shared past and collective future feel especially urgent\, this event offers an opportunity to learn from a leader who has devoted his career to informing and inspiring Americans to strive for the public good. \nQ & A will follow and copies of Secretary Bunch’s book A Fool’s Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush\, Obama\, and Trump will be available for purchase.  Although registration is not required\, the organizers would appreciate an idea about planned attendance indicated via this form. \nLonnie G. Bunch III is the 14th Secretary of the Smithsonian. He assumed his position June 16\, 2019. As Secretary\, he oversees 21 museums\, 21 libraries\, the National Zoo\, numerous research centers\, and several education units and centers. Two new museums—the National Museum of the American Latino and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum—are in development. Bunch was the founding director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture. Bunch chronicled the creation of the museum in his book\, A Fool’s Errand: Creating the National Museum of African American History and Culture in the Age of Bush\, Obama\, and Trump\, and is the first historian to be Secretary of the Institution. Since 2024\, Bunch has been Honorary Professor of Practice at Queen’s University Belfast. A member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences\, Bunch received France’s highest award\, The Legion of Honor\, in 2021. \nLynette Clemetson is Director of Wallace House Center for Journalists\, home of the Knight-Wallace Fellowships for Journalists and the Livingston Awards for Young Journalists at the University of Michigan. She came to the university from NPR where she was Senior Director of Strategy and Content Initiatives\, developing and guiding projects across broadcast\, digital and events to develop new audiences. Her career in journalism spans newspapers\, magazines and audio across a range of platforms. As a reporter\, she was a Washington-based correspondent for The New York Times and Newsweek\, writing about politics\, social issues and demographic change. Prior to her domestic correspondent work\, she was an international correspondent for Newsweek based in Hong Kong\, where she covered the former British colony’s return to Chinese rule in 1997. She moved into digital strategy and leadership in 2008 as the founding managing editor of TheRoot.com\, launched for The Washington Post Company with Henry Louis Gates Jr. She is also the former Director of Content Strategy at Pew Center on the States. \nThis 2026 Marc and Constance Jacobson Lecture is presented by the Institute for the Humanities in partnership with Wallace House Center for Journalists. Additional support provided by the Initiative for Democracy & Civic Empowerment\, Life-Changing Education\, Museum Studies Program\, U-M Library\, and the U-M Museum of Art. \nFlyer \n

SUMMARY:Museums@Noon presentation by Madeleine Harris
DESCRIPTION:Reporting Impact and Stewarding Members with UMMA’s Development Team \nMadeleine Harris (MSP24; PhD candidate\, Classical Studies) \nNovember 11 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm  \nHatcher Gallery Lab (Room 100H) or online via Zoom \nMuseum stewardship\, the process by which museums build and nurture relationships with the individuals and organizations who support them\, is an integral part of development work. Stewardship can take many forms\, ranging from individual contact to widespread outreach campaigns. This summer\, I had the opportunity to learn more about this process with the University of Michigan Art Museum’s Development team. This presentation will explore how UMMA develops and fosters its relationships with donors and supporters\, with a particular focus on “impact reports” and museum member stewardship. \n Madeleine is a 5th-year PhD candidate in the department of Classical Studies. She is currently writing her dissertation on failed initiations into marriage in Latin literature and how we can understand such failures through the lens of queer and feminist studies. She has a long-standing interest in museums\, which she has developed through docent work at the University of Michigan Natural History Museum and the Kelsey Archaeological Museum\, as well as a certificate in Museum Studies. Most recently\, she completed a summer development internship at the University of Michigan Art Museum. \nFlyer
