SUMMARY:New Voices and Detroit Museums: From Midtown and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Today\, the city of Detroit is once again taking its place at the heart of the United States’ cultural landscape—as a center of creativity\, imagination\, artistic production and social activism. Playing a key role in the new-found optimism that is taking root in Detroit are the city’s museums. Old and new institutions—from the Detroit Institute of Arts to the Michigan Science Center\, Charles Wright Museum of African American History\, the Belle Isle Conservancy\, and many other established and emerging museums and cultural institutions—have been infused with new energy\, fueled by exciting leaders and a renewed interest in the potential offered by Detroit’s public spaces. \nThe University of Michigan Museum Studies Program is pleased to host a half-day event exploring the myriad ways that Detroit’s museums are shaping the city’s present and future. This multi-format three-hour program features museum leaders and emerging professionals who will share their vision and contributions to this important work. Speakers include Dr. Tonya Matthews (President and CEO\, Michigan Science Center)\, Director Salvador Salort-Pons (Director\, President\, and CEO\, Detroit Institute of Arts)\, art historian and artist\, Professor Jeffrey Abt (Wayne State University)\, and three emerging leaders from Wayne State University’s Detroit Revitalization Fellows Program. \nFriday\, April 15 \n9:30 am – 12:45 pm \nUniversity of Michigan Museum of Art\, Helmut Stern Auditorium \nDetroit workshop program
