SUMMARY:Do We Need to Decolonize Holocaust Museums?
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Erica Lehrer\, PhD\, MSP04; Professor of History at Concordia University (Montreal\, Canada); Winter 2026 Institute Fellow\, UM Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies \nHatcher Library Gallery Lab\, Room 100H \nA central issue animating and transforming the museum sector today is the call to decolonize. This appeal began with Indigenous activists\, whose communities have been overwhelmingly hurt by the museum sector’s history and status quo. Museums of mass violence – Holocaust museums\, paradigmatic among them – have been largely exempt from decolonial critiques. As products of 20th and 21st-century social justice mandates and often created at the behest of survivor communities\, they seem at first glance not to be obvious targets for such scrutiny. Yet\, Holocaust museums are not free from entanglements with state power nor from inherited traditions and infrastructures of museum practice with their attendant biases\, exclusions\, and silences. This talk explores the potential value of decolonial museum theories and practices for Holocaust museums to renew and expand their social justice mandates. \n  \n \nEvent flyer

SUMMARY:Museums@Noon presentation by Georgia Oppenheim
DESCRIPTION:Uncovering the Legacy of the Hominin Cast Collection at the Field Museum \nGeorgia Oppenheim (MSP24; PhD candidate\, Biological Anthropology) \nSeptember 25 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm  \nHatcher Gallery Lab (Room 100H) or online via Zoom \nBecause fossils of our human ancestors (hominins) remain in their country of discovery\, museum collections relating to human origins predominantly consist of casts. These cast collections are often overlooked and undervalued in human origins research since they are not the original fossils. But\, these collections hold untapped research and teaching potential. During my internship\, I explored the 90-year legacy of human origins research at the Field Museum in Chicago through the reorganization of their hominin cast collection. \nThis talk highlights how I used my background on human evolution to contextualize the collection in support of teaching\, exhibition development\, and science communication. Overall\, this case study demonstrates how deeper investigations into museum collections can create new avenues for research and support broader museum goals. \nFlyer

SUMMARY:Museums@Noon presentation by Madeleine Harris
DESCRIPTION:Reporting Impact and Stewarding Members with UMMA’s Development Team \nMadeleine Harris (MSP24; PhD candidate\, Classical Studies) \nNovember 11 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm  \nHatcher Gallery Lab (Room 100H) or online via Zoom \nMuseum stewardship\, the process by which museums build and nurture relationships with the individuals and organizations who support them\, is an integral part of development work. Stewardship can take many forms\, ranging from individual contact to widespread outreach campaigns. This summer\, I had the opportunity to learn more about this process with the University of Michigan Art Museum’s Development team. This presentation will explore how UMMA develops and fosters its relationships with donors and supporters\, with a particular focus on “impact reports” and museum member stewardship. \n Madeleine is a 5th-year PhD candidate in the department of Classical Studies. She is currently writing her dissertation on failed initiations into marriage in Latin literature and how we can understand such failures through the lens of queer and feminist studies. She has a long-standing interest in museums\, which she has developed through docent work at the University of Michigan Natural History Museum and the Kelsey Archaeological Museum\, as well as a certificate in Museum Studies. Most recently\, she completed a summer development internship at the University of Michigan Art Museum. \nFlyer
