DESCRIPTION:This event needed to be cancelled to to COVID-19 precautions. \n \nTitle:  Collecting Oceania \nDate:  Friday\, March 13 \nTime:  12:00 pm \nLocation:  UM Museum of Art\, Multi-Purpose Room (125) \nPresenter:  Emily Cornish (PhD candidate\, History of Art) \nTraveling along numerous intellectual\, social\, political and cultural currents\, objects from the Pacific Islands have been circulating in United States’ museum collections since the nineteenth century\, especially in universal art museums.  Using a mid-Atlantic U.S. institution as a case study\, this talk explores Pacific Islands holdings and collection histories. Close engagement with museum object files\, digital catalogue\, and the objects themselves reveals a complex collecting history that encompasses the twentieth century obsession with the so-called “primitive arts\,” U.S. involvement in WWII\, and contemporary ethical dilemmas regarding the repatriation of human remains and sacred objects. By tracking aspects like objects’ display histories\, language of classification\, and more\, the bounded nature and value of this collection in relation to the museum’s current priorities\, initiative\, and constraints comes to the fore\, ultimately prompting consideration of the museum’s responsibility today to such objects and their source communities. \nBrownBag_Cornish

DESCRIPTION:This event needed to be cancelled to to COVID-19 precautions. \n \nTitle:  Preserving Context for Museum Collections: Implications\, Challenges\, Strategies \nDate:  Thursday\, March 19 \nTime:  12:00 pm \nLocation:  UM Museum of Art\, Multi-Purpose Room (125) \nPresenter:  Jeremy York (PhD candidate\, Information) \nIn this talk\, Jeremy will discuss the importance of preserving contextual information about museum objects and the challenges he experienced in doing so during his Museum Studies internship in the Research Library and Archives at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA). Jeremy’s talk will draw on two projects he worked on: assessing the feasibility of using a more robust system to track works that reference items owned by the DIA\, and making digitized photographs from historical exhibitions at the DIA available on the Web. Jeremy will describe some of the strategies he used to address challenges surrounding the capture\, enhancement\, and migration of metadata in these projects\, and reflect on his experience within the broader context of museum theory and practice. \nBrownBag_York

DESCRIPTION:This event needed to be cancelled to to COVID-19 precautions. \n \nTitle:  Reconstructing History/Reimagining Originality: The Case of Henry Ford’s English Preservations \nDate:  Friday\, March 20 \nTime:  12:00 pm \nLocation:  UM Museum of Art\, Multi-Purpose Room (125) \nPresenter:  Bradley L. Taylor (Associate Director\, Museum Studies Program) \nAs the Stock Market Crash of 1929 was about to plunge the world into the Great Depression\, Henry Ford was putting finishing touches on an outdoor museum of historic structures known today as Greenfield Village.  Ford’s interest in preserving old buildings on site had existed for years but this assemblage of structures moved from other parts of the country was something few had seen before.  Ford and his team thus led an effort to preserve in a way that offered little precedent upon which to draw. \nThis talk showcases Ford’s efforts to rescue three English structures—a retail store\, a home\, and a forge—and finds that the stories of these three preservations lead us to new ways of considering deeply held assumptions about the nature of “originality” and “authenticity.” \nBrownBag_Taylor \n

DESCRIPTION:This event needed to be cancelled to to COVID-19 precautions. \nExterior of Art Institute of Chicago. \nTitle:  Interdisciplinary College and Professional Learning at the Art Institute of Chicago \nDate:  Thursday\, March 26 \nTime:  12:00 pm \nLocation:  UM Museum of Art\, Multi-Purpose Room (125) \nPresenter:  Christina DiFabio (PhD candidate\, Interdepartmental Program in Classical Art & Archaeology) \nThis presentation will discuss how a major art museum in the U.S. engages college and professional groups within various disciplines. During the winter of 2019\, I worked in the Adult Learning Division in the Department of Learning and Public Engagement at the Art Institute of Chicago. In my practicum\, I saw how the division initiates and maintains partnerships with art students at the School of the Art Institute and medical students at University of Illinois Chicago and Rush University. I will discuss how the division approaches art education with these different audiences as well as my own research which proposed how to broaden the medical school partnership to other professions\, such as social work. My work was an initial step in a larger project that is being undertaken by the division to create a wellness program for interdisciplinary students and professionals. \nBrownBag_DiFabio
