SUMMARY:The Museum Further Afield: Conservation\, Art\, and Archaeology
DESCRIPTION:Presentation by Suzanne Davis\, Associate Curator\, Kelsey Museum of Archaeology. \nFriday\, October 20 from 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm\, UM Museum of Art auditorium \n  \nThe Museum Further Afield: Conservation\, Art\, and Archaeology \nWhen we think and talk about museums\, we are often focused on what is happening within the gallery. But certain museums support projects around the world. In this talk\, Kelsey Museum of Archaeology conservator Suzanne Davis will provide a brief introduction to the field of conservation: what conservators do and where they work\, how to become a conservator\, and some of the big-picture issues conservators are concerned about today. As a specialist in archaeological conservation\, she will then describe how her work supports the mission of the Kelsey Museum\, both in Ann Arbor but also further afield\, specifically at the Kelsey Museum/University of Michigan archaeological excavations at El Kurru\, Sudan. Conservators working at archaeological sites like El Kurru conduct the same kinds of activities as conservators in museums — condition surveys and documentation\, conservation treatment\, and collections management — but in a different setting\, with different resources\, and a different kind of collection. \n  \nMuseums at Noon_Davis
