SUMMARY:The Smithsonian Institution and the Making of the American Nonprofit Sector
DESCRIPTION:When Englishman James Smithson left $500\,000 to the United States of America to establish the Smithsonian Institution in 1829\, he improbably forced the United States Congress to design America’s first national benevolent institution. This talk will address how Congress came to a decision about whether the Smithsonian should be a government agency\, a quasi-governmental institution\, or a private corporation in the mid-nineteenth century. SUMMARY:Detroit 67: Looking Back to Move Forward – Community Engagement at the Detroit Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn 2015\, Detroit Historical Society began a multi-year community engagement project to commemorate the upcoming 50th anniversary of the civil unrest of July 1967. Called Detroit 67: Looking Back to Move Forward\, the project’s purpose is to bring together diverse voices and communities around the effects of a historic crisis. Its goal is to help our community members find our place in the present and to inspire the future. Those who engage in Detroit 67 will be able to better understand the events leading up to July 1967\, where we are today\, and connect to efforts that are moving Detroit forward. \n  \nIn this presentation\, Tobi Voigt\, Senior Director of Education and Outreach at the Society\, will talk about the origins of the project and its five key components: a comprehensive oral history project; a comprehensive\, balanced and experiential museum exhibition; an academic book publication with Wayne State University Press; a network of engaged community partners working in the region to promote understanding of the past and action toward a better future; and\, ultimately\, a model that other historical and community organizations can use to unite the community around the effects of a historic crisis. \n  \nPresented by Tobi Voigt\, Senior Director of Education and Outreach\, Detroit Historical Society \nFriday\, March 31 at 12:00 pm in the UM Museum of Art Multi-Purpose Room (125) \n  \nBrownBag_Voigt \n  \n
