SUMMARY:Taking a Look in the Mirror: Transformative Change within Museums
DESCRIPTION:Location:  University of Michigan Museum of Art\, Helmut Stern Auditorium \nMuseums do not exist in a vacuum. The external environment around museums is in a state of constant change. Yet\, it seems as though museums continue to approach diversity and inclusion work through community outreach and programs. It is time for museums to transform. We must look internally at organizational culture and traditional work practices in order to spark transformative change across the field. This talk focuses on concepts and practices to shift work culture to help museums evolve into inclusive institutions. \nChris Taylor blends passion for history\, diversity\, and inclusion work in his job as the Chief Inclusion Officer at the Minnesota Historical Society (MNHS). As part of the Executive Leadership Team of the organization\, he is responsible for creating and implementing a strategic vision to create an inclusive work culture and help staff develop inclusive work practices. SUMMARY:Tactics for the Anthropocene: Not an Alternative
DESCRIPTION:Location:  Michigan Theater (603 E. Liberty Street in downtown Ann Arbor) \nNot An Alternative is a NY-based collective that works at the intersection of art\, activism\, and critical theory. Its mission is to affect popular understandings of histories\, symbols\, and institutions through the occupation and redeployment of popular vernacular\, semiotics\, and memes. Named in The New York Times and ArtNet’s “Best in Art in 2015” round-ups\, the group’s work has been widely exhibited nationally and internationally. Their latest project\, The Natural History Museum\, is a mobile and pop-up museum that highlights the socio-political forces that shape nature\, yet are excluded from traditional natural history museums. \nPresenting for the group\, co-founder Beka Economopoulos is the VP at Fission Strategy\, a consultancy specializing in new media communications. She is also a senior trainer and Advisory Board member at the New Organizing Institute. \nSupported by the University of Michigan Museum of Natural Historyand the University of Michigan Museum Studies Program.
