Public programs facilitate dialogue between academics and professionals, informing scholarship and strengthening practice.

Multiple day conferences, year-long colloquia, individual lectures, “conversations” between individuals, hands-on workshops, and Museums at Noon talks featuring our graduate students all contribute to the remarkable richness of MSP offerings.

Video recordings of many MSP lectures are archived for viewing in our Media Gallery.

Tactics for the Anthropocene: Not an Alternative

October 13, 2016 @ 5:10 pm

Location:  Michigan Theater (603 E. Liberty Street in downtown Ann Arbor)

Not An Alternative is a NY-based collective that works at the intersection of art, activism, and critical theory. Its mission is to affect popular understandings of histories, symbols, and institutions through the occupation and redeployment of popular vernacular, semiotics, and memes. Named in The New York Times and ArtNet’s “Best in Art in 2015” round-ups, the group’s work has been widely exhibited nationally and internationally. Their latest project, The Natural History Museum, is a mobile and pop-up museum that highlights the socio-political forces that shape nature, yet are excluded from traditional natural history museums.

Presenting for the group, co-founder Beka Economopoulos is the VP at Fission Strategy, a consultancy specializing in new media communications. She is also a senior trainer and Advisory Board member at the New Organizing Institute.

Supported by the University of Michigan Museum of Natural Historyand the University of Michigan Museum Studies Program.
